ANSWERS

  1. Different flags fly for different reasons and so you may have seen any of the following.                                                                                                                                                                    

Union Jack …This could be symbolising a special event like a Royal occasion or to commemorate an important event in the history of the UK . 

The Cornish Flag, known as the Flag of St Piran. This is a white cross (a symbol of tin) on a black background (a symbol of rock).

Blue Flag . This is a blue flag with a white circle with blue lines at the bottom of the circle representing waves.  This means the beach is clean and is recognised as having an excellent standard of bathing water.

  1.  Cuckoo Mill. This would have been a place where there was a grinding mill for grinding the corn. A leat, or man-made stream, went along the side of the valley to the top of the cottages, and then ran back down to the stream in the bottom of the valley. The force of the water would have turned the grinding stones. There must have been cuckoos around and there was a wood up the side of the valley where they may have lived.

  1. It is made of slate which is a local building material. The house is completely covered in slate which is unusual, but as the stormy waves sometimes cover the whole house, it helps keep the house water tight.
  1. 18 benches. As the sea has gradually eroded the cliffs the benches have been moved away from the edge. In 2014, after a storm, one bench disappeared completely as it was washed out to sea.
  1. As you go down onto the rocks by the swimming pool, at the top of the path where the last of the greenery is on your right, you may have noticed some concrete and a couple of rusty bits of metal. This is the remains of Tinker Bunny’s shack which was there about 200 years ago. Tinker Bunny’s cave is around the corner towards Newtrain Bay, and you can identify it, as the base has been built up with slate and concrete.
  1. The Round Hole was formed due to a collapsed sea cave.
  1. These days most holiday makers hire a holiday home to stay in rather than a hotel.
  1. The farm was central to village life as it grew food for everyone to eat.

  1. The Chapel. This was the meeting place for the Methodist worshipers. The Methodists are traditionally a very strong religion in Cornwall.

 The Beach Guardian.  An organisation that promotes keeping the beaches clean and free from litter.

Saint Saviours Church (C of E), built in 1959 and named after a medieval chapel that was at St Saviours point in Padstow.
